In September 2014, the brand new first residence of Sheltering Tree Communities opened. It’s been an exciting journey since 2005 when the idea for the innovative housing for adults with developmental disabilities was first imagined by Tom and Shirley McNally and their children. Shirley has worked tirelessly on her nonprofit, Sheltering Tree, to make this dream a reality. The Orthodox Christian Churches joined the effort and together with passionate support and work of the Board of Directors, the first 9 unit complex of individual apartments with live-in manager caregivers is a reality. The most exciting part is that the new residents love it. They are independent in their own apartments, have a group of peers, and many of them for the first time in their lives have been allowed to become and live their lives as the adult people that they are. For a person with developmental disabilities, Sheltering Tree is a dream come true. Adults with developmental disabilities like Down syndrome and Autism, like all of us, want to move away from home and have our own lives, Sheltering Tree empowers this opportunity.
