From Dreams to Independence: Elise’s Story at Sheltering Tree

When she first walked through the doors of her new apartment at Sheltering Tree in late 2023, it was more than just moving boxes—it was the start of a long-awaited dream coming to life. After five years of building her life skills and preparing for this moment, she was finally living on her own, ready to embrace all the independence and opportunity that came with it.

Elise’s days are a joyful blend of creativity and purpose. Whether she’s working on a painting, reading, writing, or watching a good movie, she’s always immersed in something she loves. But it doesn’t stop there—her talent for storytelling takes center stage as a puppeteer, where she helps teach others what it’s like to live with a disability. Performing for elementary schools and community programs, she uses art to inspire empathy and understanding.

Living at Sheltering Tree has brought even more than independence. “I like putting my life skills to work—cleaning, making meals, trying new activities,” she shares. “And I’ve made new friends. The staff is awesome!”

Elise’s sense of self has grown over the years, shaped by experiences that pushed her to try new things and step into the spotlight. One of her proudest moments came when she was crowned a state titleholder in a national pageant program that empowers girls and women with disabilities to build confidence and celebrate their unique talents. Representing Nebraska at the national competition in Chicago, she met other inspiring young women from across the country, forming friendships and memories she’ll never forget.

To those considering a move to Sheltering Tree, Elise offers heartfelt advice: “Moving to your own place can be hard. It takes time to adjust, but it’s worth it.”

Elise’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right support—independence, community, and a life filled with meaning and joy.
