Community Calendar

The heart of future residential living is taking part in community events.  Families are encouraged to get acquainted.  The goal is the same – developing a community where my son or daughter is happy.

Ask for your connection to the community calendar at shirley@shelteringtreecommunity.org or call 402-679-4444.

Volunteers and families took individuals to 30 or 40 activities last year, ranging from sporting events, museums, Omaha Fashion Week, the State Fair, going to movies,  making movies,  manicures, face painting for the Zombie Walk, the Renaissance Fair, the national dog show, hiking in the forest, strawberry  and apple picking, parades, parties and more.  If someone had an idea of a place to go that sounded like fun to the group, we made it happen.  Most activities are free or under $10.  All donations to Sheltering Tree go to the benefit of adult persons with developmental disabilities.

Special times to hang out with friends, socialize and learn new things are being scheduled throughout the Omaha metro area.  For a calendar of activities, events, classes and clubs contact Shirley at 402-679-4444.

KROC Center

An amazing gem, the beautiful KROC Center in South Omaha is making special memberships prices available through Sheltering Tree.  You can spend your days getting fit in the gym, swimming, taking lessons in ceramics, pottery, zumba and in general rocking it out.  Join us all, we can’t wait to get started.

The Aktion Club

The Bellevue, NE Kiwanis helped Sheltering Tree establish an Aktion Club allowing our community to join the Kiwanis Aktion clubs for persons with developmental disabilities all over the world.   Members spend hours each month volunteering, fundraising for needy children’s projects and just enjoying themselves with others in the Bellevue community.  From helping others clean road sides, baking brownie treats for the K-Kids volunteers, decorating Christmas cookies for firemen, neighbors and City administrators, a chili feed to raise money for UNICEF, participating in Earth Day with Green Bellevue, and passing out cold water bottles to over 4,000 K-10 runners each year at Mahoney State Park, and ringing bells for Salvation Army at Christmastime, their helping hands lighten the load of others.

Guest speakers at their meetings cover topics as varied as birds wintering in Nebraska from a Fontenelle Forest worker, to bee keeping, bike riding, clowning, and other topics members find interesting to learn about.  The members lead the meetings and vote on all decisions including an annual trip to Adventureland from money earned by their efforts.
